Hey there fellow modelers
What do you think, is the bachman 8/21 pin decoder the best cheap dcc or is there something else better but just as cheap out there?
Thanks

After 'shelving' the hobby for around 20 years I rekindled my interest after retiring a few years ago finding things digital decided that was the way to go. I have fitted the Bachman decoder to 20 odd steam locos, some proving very difficult to locate within, been very satisfied, albeit have 'blown' a couple by insufficient care, and one refusing to'talk'. Some will need protracted adjustments to the cv values to obtain best performance,My benchmark is that loco should crawl round the layout with a minumum of 1 Rev of drivers in 2 seconds, this requires good track and near perfect connections, so tender pickups I consider essential or front pony trucks to give the loco 'spread' over points etc. Must suggest though if you not very 'capable'[in a most respectful way ] get it done professionally,Retd Elec/Mech Eng.

The Bachmann decoders are decent kit, but I find the Hornby R.8249 just as good if not better. The Hornby R.8215 decoder is best avoided as early examples suffered from a reset problem and stocks of these may still on shop shelves.

The only problem with the Hornby R.8215 and R.8249 decoders is their 500ma maximum current capacity.

The Hornby decoders tend to cheaper as a rule as well from the big discounters.
