hello peeps,
anyone got any ideas on sorting a fault on my flying scotsman tender drive..after a few laps round the track it appeared to show a little smoke from tender area and now smells of burning..i imediately stopped running it but since then it appears to be dead other than slight sparking when connecting tender to loco..ive checked and all seems intact under the body covers..any ideas / diagrams ?????

The aramture is burnt out in the motor. The smoke you saw was the motor coils burning out. Probably caused by a short.

It is repairable but it is a skilled job to do it right and is best left to a professional. I have a customers one in the workshop at the moment with a similar fault, just fitted a new armature to it.

We charge £11.75 for labour, about the cheapest in the UK, you might get cheaper but I would be wary. Parts will cost you around £15-£18. So you are looking at the £20-£27 mark to repair it wherever you take the model, the days of the two pence spare are long gone. If there's anything else wrong, like a loco I had recently it will soon add up.

Fitting an armature correctly to your loco is a skilled job, the armature has to have the drive gear on at exactly the right distance from the bottom of the armature or it won't mesh with the drive train or will cause excessive wear to the gear teeth, also the back bearing will require a special factory yellow grease which us ex-main dealers and main dealers keep for servicing, the same grease used in the factory. If this grease isn't used the rear armature bearing can overheat cause premature failure. As I said a skilled job to do it right.
