I have a six year old and would love to build a good set for him and myself (I never had a train set as a boy, so I thought it would be nice to do it together) So I am looking for recommendations for a 6x4 setup, and digital and a steam goods train set.
Any recommendations or tips please?

If you have the space go for an 8 x 4 layout rather than a 6 x 4. The 6 x 4 is rather limited in space terms and layouts build in such a small space can get boring.

Digital is fine but for a youngster you are probably best sticking to ordinary DC for a start. A set like the OO scale Hornby City Industrial Set is a good starting point. It is half the normal price for this year only. The set has a nice oval of track with 3rd radius curves(these are essential when you come to run modern tender locos as most modern British outline tender locos require a minimum radius curve of 2nd radius, and even that can be tight for them at times), there is also in the set a point/turnout, siding with buffer stop, telegraph poles, 3 permanent way huts, gradient standard DC controller with seperate transformer, a victorian 4 wheel coach, lowmac well goods flat car, 12ton box wagon, and a nice limited edition Beswick open wagon. The locomotive is the standard Hornby ex-caledonian pug in Furness railway livery this can be made digital with ease at a later date, finally the set has a mid range 6 x 4 track mat for those tiny layout ideas. All for £60(around $100 US), bargain!
