Running a model locomotive in is an art. I use an oval of third radius Tri-ang Super 4 track for running in model locos.

First you make sure the model is lubricated as models can dry out in the box if they have been in the shop a while. Then gently running the loco at slow crawling speed you allow the loco to run for about 10 mins in either direction, once this is done, check lubrication and check for heat in bearings etc just like the real thing. Then turn the locomotive aroudn and allow to run for anther ten minutes in either direction at slow crawl speeds. Once this doen you can increase the speeds slowly over time until you reach flat out. The key to a models long mechanical life is slow and gently does it.
