What do you do to spice up you train set layouts? It great that the train moves, but shouldn't there be more life to the layout and model?

lighting, working level crossing gates, with working crossing gate wheel in signal box, semphore and colour light signals, sounds, shunting, working transport(Tri-ang Minic Motorways), working container cranes, working turntables, working dock side cranes, loading hoppers and unloading conveyor belts, neon signs, the list is endless.
